Mother Eddie Dean Chambliss-Dowdell-Benton, 80 of Hartford, departed peacefully in the Loving and everlasting arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at Kindred Park View Hospital in Springfield, MA on Saturday September 22, 2012. Dean, as he called her, was the beloved and very faithful wife to the late Master Chef, Richard "Dick" Benton. Eddie Dean was born in Americus, Georgia on March 2, 1932 to her beloved parents, Forest and Eunice (Kelly) Chambliss. She graduated from Staley High School in Americus, GA and was a pioneer and the voice of so many woman crying for equality. Mother Benton, as she is known, was predeceased by her first born John Dowdell III, sister, Evelyn Chambliss of Hartford, and two brothers Eddie "Red" Kelly and Melvin Chambliss, both of Americus, GA. Eddie was a faithful member of Faith Congregational Church, United Church of Christ of Hartford for her entire life. Eddie leaves to cherish her memory three children Brenda Lavette Dowdell, Rev. Ben J. Dowdell, and Michele Renee Dowdell of Hartford; four grandchildren Dayle (Everett) Blue, Chamara Jackson, Cherron Jackson all of Hartford and Eunica Dowdell of Columbus, SC; and nine Great-Grandchildren. Mother Eddie Benton leaves, without question a host of sons and daughters, of both family and friends. She has impacted so many lives with her wisdom, empathy, fairness and understanding. This Georgia Peach, who was the Peach of Georgia, to many, will have Calling Hours Celebration on Friday, September 28th from 10 - 11 a.m. and Home Going Celebration, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Faith Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 2030 Main Street, Hartford.
